US-China relations: Beijing should contain ‘extreme nationalism’, ex-diplomat warns

Beijing should contain the rise of populism and “extreme nationalism” in China, a former senior diplomat has warned, and he said it was wrong to think the United States is in decline. Yuan Nansheng, vice-president of foreign ministry think tank the China Institute of International Studies, made the remarks in an article outlining what he said were key changes that would reset bilateral relations when the coronavirus pandemic is over. “In the post-pandemic era, US policy towards China could shift focus to containment and towards a ‘new Cold War’,” he wrote in the article posted on the WeChat account of Peking University’s Institute of International and Strategic Studies on Tuesday. “Although it is unlikely that China and the US will go down the road of decoupling, this possibility cannot be eliminated and should be given careful attention,” said Yuan, whose last diplomatic posting was as China’s consul general in San Francisco. While the foreign ministry has repeatedly pointed out t...

Trump, Biden to play 'China card' in debate

The first debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden will be held on Tuesday night local time, and due to recent tensions between China and the US, the event has also attracted the attention of the Chinese public and social media network. Chinese experts said the candidates will keep playing the "China card" to attack each other. On social media platform Sina Weibo, the "2020 US presidential election" is one of the hottest international news topics, which received more than 21.38 million views as of late Tuesday, and multiple Chinese media outlets also reported on what the two candidates are going to say in the first debate. The US presidential debate is not an occasion for observers to learn what policies the candidates would make after they get elected, but an opportunity for the candidates to attack, accuse and stigmatize each other. Their debate performance would be much more important than their narratives about policies, analysts said.  The words will not refle...

Indian strategists should not be kidnapped by nationalism

China will resolutely take actions to prevent TikTok and its technologies from falling into the US' hands to protect its national security and the interests of its enterprises, experts said on Sunday, as a hearing continues as of press time in the US over whether the US government's TikTok ban will be halted. The popular video-sharing app will be removed from the Apple and Google app  stores from 11:59 pm Sunday (US time) unless federal judge Carl Nichols, who was chairing an emergency court hearing, decides to halt the ban.  The court's ruling on Sunday won't actually make a significant difference as the Trump administration will undoubtedly continue its push for a full ban of TikTok in the US, experts said. US President Donald Trump initially signed an executive order imposing a November 12 deadline for ByteDance to sell or "spin off" TikTok's operations in the US on national security grounds. After a tentative deal was revealed between ByteDance and US ...

Most Americans, people in 13 rich nations say US has mishandled COVID-19

Americans and people in other 13 countries overwhelmingly believe the US has done a terrible job in dealing with COVID-19 and that America's social fabric is becoming more polarized, according to the results of a newly published survey by Pew Research. So far, over 7.1 million Americans have been infected with coronavirus and over 200,000 have died of the disease. The research, revealed on Monday, demonstrated that 62 percent of Americans say the US response to the coronavirus outbreak has been less effective than that of other wealthy nations, while 25 percent say the country's response has been about as effective and 13 percent say it has been more effective. Among the surveyed, almost nine-in-ten Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents (87 percent) say the US response has been less effective than that of other wealthy countries, while the proportion stands at 34 percent among Republicans and GOP leaners. Additionally, the number of Americans who give high marks to publ...

Nasa chief warns US Congress about Chinese space station

Nasa chief Jim Bridenstine told lawmakers on Wednesday it was crucial for the US to maintain a presence in Earth’s orbit after the International Space Station is decommissioned so that China does not gain a strategic advantage. The first parts of the ISS were launched in 1998 and it has been continuously lived in since 2000. The station, which serves as a space science lab and is a partnership between the US, Russia, Japan, Europe and Canada, is currently expected to be operated until 2030. “I’ll tell you one thing that has me very concerned – and that is that a day is coming when the International Space Station comes to the end of its useful life,” Bridenstine said. In order to be able to have the United States of America have a presence in low Earth orbit, we have to be prepared for what comes next,” he added. To that end, Nasa has requested US$150 million for the 2021 financial year to help develop the commercialization of low Earth orbit, defined as 2,000km (1,200 miles) or less fr...
